Amorfeus

Apr 22 - Jul 23

An extended, generative art project, introduced to the public at her debut solo exhibition in ‘23, exploring how the integration of digital technologies allows for sustainable practice of ceramic mediums.

Immersive Ceramics Project

Each piece serves as a cyclical iteration bound by a predetermined set of rules; representing in equal parts, the human and the natural. The same body of clay is recycled and re-used for each iterative piece, 3D scanned as a digital replica before the physical is destroyed by the public. The digital representation grows into a relic over time with AI generated moss covering its surface until the digital asset is resold, encouraging the movement of pieces, with royalties channelled into sustainability ventures around the world. Amorfeus invites a collaborative audience to take part in the creative process, provoking them to consider the time taken in its creation and what will happen next, mirroring our relationship with the planet and the part we play in both its destruction and regeneration.

The Process

  • Large scale construction of individual works or installation following aesthetic guidelines. The piece is left unfired.

  • The unfired artwork gets professionally scanned so that a 3D replica can be made. This 3D artwork is hosted on the blockchain and coded to include a generative AI element which causes the growth of digital moss over time until it covers the whole 3D model. This moss disappears when the digital artwork is resold and moved to a different wallet.

  • At exhibition or as part of a public event the artwork is unveiled and the public is invited to collaborate in the destruction of the artwork.

  • The clay from the artwork is broken down and reconstituted until it is in its original, workable form. This clay is then used to make subsequent artworks, making the collection a purely sustainable and regenerative.

In Exhibition

Driven in the boot of a car all the way from London to a small island in the Aegean, the first iteration of Amorfeus was revealed to an intimate group of visitors in the summer of 2023. The environment was electric as locals and expats alike were invited to participate in the destruction of the sculpture, many of whom have visited galleries around the world and followed strict rules of ‘no touching’ the artworks.
